Calderdale Museums are open again!

Shibden Hall, the home of Anne Lister 1791-1840, also known as Gentleman Jack, is welcoming visitors every day 10.00-17.00 Monday to Friday and 11.00-17.00 Saturday and Sunday but tickets must be pre booked online at www.eventbrite.co.uk in advance. This fascinating house dates from 1420 and shows visitors what it must have been like to live and work there. Visit the barns and see displays relating to different crafts like a blacksmiths, wheelwrights, saddlers and coopers. Don’t forget the splendid grounds with gardens, play area, minature railway, boating lake and cafe.

The Bankfield Museum was once the home of Colonel Edward Akroyd, a local mill owner and philanthropist, who created a model village, now a conservation area, called Akroydon which is a smaller version of the famous Saltaire about 10 miles away. (also well worth a visit) A museum since 1887, Bankfield shows us the story of industrial Halifax and Calderdale and includes some unique collections of costumes, jewellery, toys and military history in a beautiful setting. Open Tuesday to Saturday 10.00 to 16.00 but book in advance.

For more information on both these venues, see www.museums@calderdale.gov.uk

Calderdale Industrial Museum is situated very close to the Piece Hall in the town centre and focuses on exhibits showing the industrial heritage of Calderdale which is dominated by the textile industry although sweets and chocolate have played a part too! www.calderdaleindustrial.co.uk will tell you more.

It is run entirely by volunteers and is open on Saturdays 10.00 to 16.00. Booking is not required but social distancing measures must be kept.

What a lovely review! Thank you

We love getting reviews from guests when they leave Dyer’s Cottage Halifax but especially like those who understand all the effort and time involved in maintaining our high standards.

Read all about it! The Evening Standard features the Alma Inn at Cottonstones near Sowerby Bridge

Taking a walk on Friday in the beautiful countryside above Sowerby Bridge and Ripponden, we noticed the frenzy of activity outside the Alma Inn with staff setting up an outside bar and a marquee with rolled up sides. Somehow the London based Evening Standard heard the news too as it features the pub in its online edition today. www.alma-inn.co.uk

Winter Wonderland in Washer Lane Halifax

Festive Greetings from Dyer’s Cottage

John and Violet Mackintosh opened a pastry shop in Halifax in 1890 and added a special toffee to their range of products. This quickly became so successful that a factory was acquired and when demand exceeded possible production, the factory moved to a larger premise. His marketing skills were way ahead of his time and by the use of clever graphics and cartoons like this, the whole world soon knew about Rolo, Quality Street and later Caramac and Toffee Crisp. A merger with Rowntree’s of York in 1969 led to the formation of Rowntree Mackintosh Confectionary which was subsequently bought by Nestle although there remains a factory in the town close to Halifax Railway station. We remain “Toffee Town” 100 years after the name was first applied to Halifax.

We wish all our guests past, present and future a very Happy Christmas and hope your chimney is large enough for Santa and his reindeer.

Wonderful to see episode 4 of ITVs “For the Love of Britain” featuring Yorkshire

Amazing to watch this programme highlighting why Yorkshire attracts so many visitors. Stunning scenery of moors, dales, coast and historic buildings as well as cycling challenges and literary connections.

Much of the programme was filmed within 30 miles of Dyer’s Holiday Cottage between Halifax and Sowerby Bridge. We saw Ben Fogle get on a bike from Happy Days Cycles near us www.happydayscycles.co.uk and attempt to ascend a really challenging old packhorse route from Hebden Bridge to Heptonstall. The Buttress may be short but it’s certainly mighty and many a keen cyclist struggles to get up this cobbled route in one go. Read more about it at www.visitcalderdale.com/the-buttress

We also saw Julia Bradbury walking the moors between Haworth, home of the famous Bronte family, and the ruins of Top Withens, reputedly the inspiration for Wuthering Heights, the most famous novel of Emily Bronte.

Further North is the limestone topography of the Yorkshire Dales National Park near Malham which makes a great day out. Or the delightful coastal resorts of Whitby, Scarborough and Robin Hoods Bay are just a 2 hour drive.

Thanks go to Phil Fearnley of www.halovue.co.uk for his amazing drone footage. A local from Sowerby Bridge, he also filmed our 360 degrees virtual tour and included more of his local work so that the beauty of Calderdale can be seen by all. If you are planning a Yorkshire holiday in 2021, please do get in touch.

Socially distanced filming of series 2 of ‘Gentleman Jack’ today in Halifax

We were so lucky to catch filming of ‘Gentleman Jack’ on Wakefield Gate so close to us this morning. Reassuring to see the crew wearing masks and we send our good wishes to everyone involved.
